News from Sioux Lookout
I am glad all of snow is gone finally, it left at the end of April and our lakes are now open – just in time for the opening of fishing season!
At the Attendance Centre things are getting much busier and my case load has increased substantially. Many of my new clients have been referred to me by one of the elementary schools here in Sioux Lookout. I have also been closely working with the high school as well and have received referrals from them. Much of the work I do with the students is mostly academic work. With the elementary school students, I have been doing some Life Skills Programming with them such as homework schedules, resume preparation, and letting them know once they graduate from grade 8 they can start getting their volunteer hours for high school.
For some of these students I will be looking into a program called The Reach Ahead Program. It’s designed for students with Individual Education Plans. The students go the high school prior to it starting up and getting familiar with the school. The kids entering into high school for the next school year will be going to a brand-new school. The students who attend this program receive one high school credit.
When speaking with the Vice Principal I was told there has been a lot of positive feedback for the work I have been doing with the students. Also, with summer being almost upon us means I face a new problem of my probation kids not showing up for their appointments because they would rather be with their friends. With the nicer weather it makes it easier for them to leave school and either bike or walk to where ever they want to go. I am looking very forward to this summer as it will be busy. I have enclosed a few pictures of beaches and sunsets from Sioux Lookout area. I hope everybody has a great summer.
