Computer Security and Phishing

On November 14th our WJS network was the victim of a phishing scam. This attack came through an outside vendor whose system was compromised. How this works is that the bad guys will do research and figure out the structure of the organization. They will then attempt to impersonate someone with power in the organization and try to convince staff to forward some type of information over the internet which should always be protected. Once they are inside a system and getting information, they continue to infiltrate other systems.

So, what can be done to protect our selves?

While we take security seriously and are always raising the bar to protect us from intrusion, want you to be aware of the following tip for keeping your self safe from internet scams.

Be trusting but call someone to verify.

If you have even the slightest sense that something might not be right, just call IT @ 604 629 7893. Then, you could call one other person to confirm. It could be your supervisor, or their supervisor.
Do not open the email, if you do by accident, do not forward it and call IT immediately. When you are asked to delete it, also delete it from your deleted files.

Please remember that no security issue it too small. There are no risks worth taking that we cannot take the time to address by spending a little bit of time on the phone confirming that something suspicious is actually okay.

Tech is here to help you do you job well and safely.
