Chief of Human Resources – Debbie Olinyk
Member of the WJS Canada HR Team
Debbie Olinyk is a member of the WJS Canada HR Team and works out of the Maple Ridge, BC office. We’ve asked Debbie to participate in a short Q&A to help you get to know her. Here is what Debbie had to say…
Q: What’s your role at WJS?
I am the Chief of Human Resources and a member of the National Management Team (NMT). In my role at WJS Canada I:
- manage and administer all aspects of WJS personnel functions
- support regional human resources activities and initiatives
- coordinate, facilitate and monitor WJS Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) committees, systems and related training
- direct implementation and administration of mandated payroll regulations and policies and collective agreements
- design and implement payroll policies and procedures; and
- administer employee benefit plans according to master agreement.
Q: What do you think makes WJS different from other organizations?
WJS does not treat people as numbers, representatives of WJS at all levels try to get to know and support employees with their goals, WJS cares about employees as well as individuals in service.
Q: Why did you want to work with WJS Canada?
I wanted to be part of an organization that was doing good things for people and communities.
Q: What’s the most important part of your role?
Listening to people and then doing our best to support people in their roles so they can feel proud, strong and confident in the work that they do.
Q: Will you share something about you that we may not already know?
I am a lover of gardening and all animals. I should only ever plan to work at an animal shelter if and when I move to a bigger house with property! I appreciate humor and gentle sarcasm, love opera as much as I hate watching love stories or drama because in either of those situations I’m the crier in the room – lol
Q: What do you do outside of work?
Gardening, take care of and clean up after my grrr – animals, spend time with my family, sight see and explore community events.
